Time for Action is Now – Demand A Plan to End Gun Violence

demandaplan3Before I start … I just want to send my deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and the community as a whole of Sandy Hook and Newtown. What occurred was an unspeakable tragedy that no words can come even close to providing true solace. And while I think that nothing will ever compensate for all of those beautiful people lost … maybe if action is taken  … if other lives are saved through government action. Maybe … just alittle bit their loss won’t be in vain.

I would consider myself … both personally and as an Australian as a friend of the US. And As a friend it is my role to be there is good times and in bad, successes, failures, triumphs and sadness … but I also think a core roles of a true friend is to tell you what you need to hear  … not necessarily what you want to hear. I am not saying that I have all the answers. But is with an open and full heart I say .. you MUST do something about gun control and gun violence. Too many people have died … too many people have mourned and still mourn people needlessly killed by gun violence. It is time to Demand a Plan from your elected officials to End Gun Violence

I know it can be hard for Australians to understand the gun cultural within the US … and I am not immune to that. But I have been a student of American history for … well lets just say a while (cough cough) and I understand the historical context of the Second Amendment. However even with this understanding I do not understand the laws around gun control in America .. especially when it relates to semi-automatic assault weapons and other guns that’s only purpose is for killing and hurting other people.

I don’t understand why it is not law already to

  1. Require a criminal background check for every gun sold in America – keeping guns away from people with criminal records, on terror watch lists, mental health issues and perpetrators of domestic violence
  2. Ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
  3. Make gun trafficking a federal crime, including real penalties for “straw purchasers”

If you are an American and want to know how you can make a difference … visit DemandAPlan.org

Please America .. do something meaningful that will last not just now,not just 10 years but for all time … and do it now.

  • I agree 100% Bron, easy access to semi automatic weapons is a recipe for disaster. It makes me so proud of the Australian govt and people who reacted so fast after the massacre at Port Arthur. I hope with all my heart that the US makes changes.
