Self-study, self-exploration, self-empowerment — these are the virtues of a great education.” (Shimon Schocken)
I love TED and today I saw and had to share a really inspiration talk by Shimon Schocken. During his presentation he speaks about his views on self-directed learning and learning through exploration and discovery. I love his vision. I am a fan of the idea of self-directed study and continuous life-long learning. And agree with the notion that grades and traditional learning do not encourage risk taking and exploration.
What he also covered was the development of their computer course, Nand2Tetris where they get their students to build a computer from scratch all the way up to building programs … and how they put it online and gave it ALL away for free … the tools, simulators, specifications and other building blocks. He also speaks about how surprised they were when thousands took up the challenge to build and learn based on their curriculum and organizing their own classes in the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). It is amazing what they did and how it has developed and grown.
A great presentation worth watching.
